Art is the mother of technology as every invention is an art of the imagination.
I was the curator of the Adages, Images & Messages Art Exhibition that was held last Saturday at the Nigeria LNG RA on Bonny Island in Nigeria, but most of the visitors couldn’t understand the abstract installations of a Nigerian artist, because it was not a drawing, painting or scupture. So, many people often cannot see any relationship between Art and Technology and such an interactive exhibition would be highly beneficial in the art education of those who are ignorant of the synergy of Art and Technology is the advancement of modern civilization since Leonardo Da Vinci drew the flying machine.
My name is Chelsea Cromar, my hope is that I may be able to gain some insight on the process of curating from your experience with media art.
I am a fourth year New Media student at Ryerson University, and am working with 6 of my peers to curate the upcoming 4th year Festival in March. We are currently in the research and concept stage and I was hoping you may be able to answer the following few questions to help us in our creation of a professional level exhibition!
The following are the questions we are most struggling with:
1) In your process of curation, how do you go about creating a
cohesive and coherent exhibition when dealing with multiple
artists, and multiple themes?
2) What advice do you have regarding the creation of an overarching
narrative surrounding a muti-artist exhibition? For example, would you suggest highlighting specific works, or creating a removed narrative that remains seperate from the artists’ individual creations?
3)What are some main problems that you have come across when curating New Media shows?
4)Do you have any tips or Advice to help us with putting on a successful show?
We would of course appreciate any other knowledge you may be able to impart on us as well!
Thank you so much for your help!
We appreciate any advice you may have, and look forward to seeing you at the exhibition in March!
Sincerely,
Chelsea Cromar (and the 4th year New Media Curatorial Group!)
