The Washington Post writes about Rethink…

Howard Kurtz, the Washington Post media critic, featured some of the things we’re doing in his Media Notes column today:
“In an era of declining circulation and shrinking budgets, virtually every paper in America is trying to jazz up its product while beefing up its online presence. But the effort in San Jose, where the Internet bubble popped hard in 2000, may be the most ambitious — or the most desperate.”
We hope it’s the former, rather than the latter. But you can read the whole thing yourself here.

As a journalist, I feel I need to be hit in the head with a baseball bat, develop memory loss and then relearn what should go in a newspaper heading into the year 2008.
Carole Leigh Hutton confirms that sooner rather than later I should cancel my subscription as the print edition will continue to degrade. I have considered what to do next and here is my plan: subscribe to the New York Times print edition and read local coverage online mainly about San Jose politics. What I have found most sad about the decline of the Mercury News is reading two week old reprints from the New York Times. I might as well go straight to the source as I am willing to pay for useful and timely information. As for local tech news, so many blogs do a much better job helping me understand trends in technology such as TechCrunch. Dean’s articles may be good for novices, but I find them lacking in any real depth.

Awesome. Just be sure to stay away from the Picasso For A Day creators during the relearning process.
